Preliminary Tattoo Design for a Co-Worker

It's the Jersey Devil.

What can I say, his description was an admirable way to show off his New Jersey pride!

Vulture doodles!

Turkey vultures are some of my favorite birds.  There's something about their anatomy that really appeals to me, and it just begs to be cartoonified.  Kinda proud of these!

Gettin' back into Digital Painting!

Now that I have more time to myself than usual, it's high time that I start practicing my digital painting, and boost my skills.  Lately Pokemon has been a huge inspiration for me artistically, along with Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda in this case.  So here's the first of hopefully many more digital work!

Cheers!

Korvus, Fiakra's Mascot

Here is a finalized version of Korvus, that I painted digitally from one of my previous sketches of him a few posts ago, that I accidentally deleted.  I thought this one had the most appealing character, and had a blast inking and painting it!

Hopefully in the near future we'll see Korvus on T-shirts, tour posters, and other merchandise.

Cheers!!!

"The Adventures of Coconut the Courageous and Pumpkin:" A Few Moments from my SVA Thesis Film

These last few months have probably been one of the most emotionally draining, stressful, jubilant times in my life.  I was able to finish my 9 month old love child from hell, and graduate from The School of Visual Arts with some of the best friends I've ever made, and an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.

However, I did not want to leave that school without knowing that I created a legitimate, hand-drawn film inspired by all my favorite animated films.  I was not as open to using Flash or Toonboom, and I believed that I would achieve the best result if I stayed within my comfort zone, which was plain old pencil and paper.

It was certainly more work than I bargained for, and I learned the hard way of the dissonance that happens when you try to bring traditional and digital methods together and try to make them play nice.  I can't say for sure if and when I'll ever venture back into paper animation, it all depends on how much free time and inspiration my future holds i guess.

After a long, relaxing break from most things animation related, I've decided to revisit my thesis, compile a few of what I believe to be my strongest moments from my "tradigitally" hand-drawn film, and post them.  I grabbed a few of my favorite key and breakdown drawings, and a few layouts from some of my favorite shots.  These are all final drawings, as I didn't give myself the legroom to go back and produce clean-up drawings or ink them.  The drawings were scanned directly into Photoshop and hand painted, to give a Xerox-ish, cel-like impression over my layouts.

I'll have more to come.

Enjoy!

Receipt Doodles

I work the late shift at my current job as a parking attendant, which usually entails long hours of stamping and selling tickets to snooty tourists in Mercedes-Benz's and handling a LOT of cash. But there are always the days where there wasn't much going on, and things get extremely boring. Before I got comfortable with the job and earned the trust of my superiors, I used to alleviate this boredom by doodling on the backs of old receipts that would pile up in my wallet. There would always be a BIC pen laying around, and I enjoy sketching in BIC pen anyway. Most of these are just ideas I had at the time or just lovingly rendered fan art. Not sure if there are anymore to come, because lately I've just been toting along my bulky hard-bound sketchbook to work on my animation thesis stuff(i.e. concept art, breakdown drawings, thumbnails, ideas, etc)

Pancake Flip Pencil Test

This was the first thing my 3rd year animation professor Howard Beckerman assigned to us. The objective was simple, make a believable scenario of a pancake being flipped with a spatula. He didn't even want us to test it, so I chipped away at it on my lightbox at home. I tested it when I got back to the studio, and didn't do a thing to it, I was pretty proud of the result!
